Congratulations to Lotem Bassan-Nygate, Marcy Shieh, Juan Qian, and Philip Bunn for receiving the Department’s Best Dissertation Prizes!
Lotem Bassan-Nygate received the Department’s Best Dissertation Prize in International Relations for her dissertation, “Who Is Watching? The Consequences of Foreign Criticism”. Lotem, a summer 2023 graduate, is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Niehaus Center for Globalization and Governance at Princeton University.
Marcy Shieh received the Department’s Best Dissertation Prize in American Politics for her dissertation, “The Impact of Campaigns and Elections on the Behavior of State Supreme Court Justices and Their Voters”. Marcy, a spring 2023 graduate, is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Political Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and starting August 2024, will be an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Miami University in Ohio.
Juan Qian received the Department’s Best Dissertation Prize in Comparative Politics for his dissertation, “Statebuilding by Campaign: Regime Consolidation, Bureaucratic Compliance, and Political Control in Modern China”. Juan, a summer 2023 graduate, is an Earl S. Johnson Instructor in Political Science at the University of Chicago.
Philip Bunn received the Department’s Best Dissertation Prize in Political Theory for his dissertation, “The Heart of a Machine: Technological Threats to Liberty in Liberal Political Thought”. Philip, a spring 2023 graduate, is a Lyceum Visiting Scholar with the Lyceum Program in the Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism at Clemson University.
