Sitting
presidents almost invariably do one piece (or more) on the fact that they—and
they only—have had the experience of actually holding the office. As good
as any among these is the effort from the unsuccessful re-election campaign
of Democrat Jimmy Carter in 1980. In the end, voters did acknowledge the ‘presidential-ness’
of Carter, but thereby held him responsible, negatively, for failures in both
domestic and foreign policy.
